Peel Park Primary School has physical education and school sport at its core. Every child participates in at least two hours of quality physical activity every week and are encouraged to join in at least one extra-curricular activity.

At playtimes and dinnertimes children have the opportunity to join in supervised games such as football, tag rugby or cricket as well as a selection of more traditional playground games. Each academic year we hold inter school competitions, these include Kurling, football and running.

At Peel Park we are fortunate to have motivated and enthusiastic staff, including specialist PE staff, that are able to offer pupils an outstanding PE curriculum and a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. These activities take place before and after school as well as at lunch times. Below is a list of sports that are on offer throughout the year at Peel Park:

In Physical Education the children take part in a wide variety of activities, completing one lesson inside and one outside. We firmly believe that given opportunities to take part in a range of activities, children will start to develop the life skills of empathy, resilience and meeting a challenge, in addition to developing higher aspirations for themselves. Within these weekly lessons links are made to the wider curriculum such as speaking and listening in English where children are encouraged to describe what they have done and to discuss how they might improve their performance using ‘two stars and a wish’ just like they would in the classroom for their written work. Maths skills are also integrated into PE lessons across the school, whether it is simple counting skills in Key Stage 1 or more complex problem solving in Key stage 2. Teachers also form strong links with the foundation subjects’ dependant on the classes’ topic at that time and are encouraged to plan lessons which see children taking part in physically active tasks.

Year five and six pupils are given the opportunity to take part in weekly swimming lessons. These lessons are used to either enhance able swimmers capabilities or ensure that all children are confident around water and are able to swim a minimum of 25 metres. We also offer a weekly swimming lesson for a number of our special educational needs children which has helped raise their self-esteem and water safety skills.

Competitive sport plays an essential role in our extra-curricular activities. We are a member of the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley School Sports Partnership; this enables us to participate in competitive sporting competitions across all year groups throughout the academic year. During the previous year we have competed in numerous events including: football, cross country, basketball, High 5 netball, athletics, dodgeball, orienteering and cricket, often experiencing considerable success.

Through competing at such events we have been able to make strong links to local clubs such as Accrington Stanley Football Club, Burnley Rugby Club, Hyndburn Athletics Club and Accrington Girls and Ladies Football Club.
