SATs Support & Revision

Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Assessments

At Peel Park Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to achieve their very best. Throughout Year 6, our pupils continue to build on the knowledge, skills and understanding they have developed across their time at primary school.

The Key Stage 2 national curriculum tests (SATs) are an opportunity for children to demonstrate some of what they have learnt during their primary education. They are just one part of the assessment information that teachers use to understand each child's strengths and identify where further support may be needed.

When are the 2027 SATs?

The statutory KS2 tests will take place from:

Monday 10 May to Thursday 13 May 2027

Date Assessment
Monday 10 May English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling
Tuesday 11 May English Reading
Wednesday 12 May Mathematics – Arithmetic and Reasoning
Thursday 13 May Mathematics – Reasoning

There are no national tests in English writing or science at the end of Key Stage 2. These are assessed by teachers using evidence from pupils' work across the year.

How do we prepare children at Peel Park?

Our approach to SATs preparation is rooted in high-quality teaching, excellent relationships and a strong understanding of each child's individual needs.

Children will be supported through our inclusive and comprehensive learning offer, with teachers continually identifying strengths and areas for development. Where additional support is appropriate, this will be provided in a way that is carefully tailored to the needs of individual pupils.

Our fantastic teaching staff work hard throughout the year to ensure that children have secure foundations in reading, writing and mathematics, alongside the confidence, resilience and independence they need to approach assessments positively.

SATs are not about putting children under unnecessary pressure. The tests assess knowledge and skills that children have been taught as part of the national curriculum. Our aim is to ensure that children feel prepared, confident and able to demonstrate what they know.

Revision Classes

During the Spring Term, we will offer additional revision sessions to support children in preparing for their Key Stage 2 assessments.

Initially, these sessions will provide targeted support for children who are not yet secure in particular areas of their learning. This additional support will give children further opportunities to practise key knowledge and skills, address misconceptions and build their confidence ahead of the assessments.

As we move closer to SATs week, the revision offer will be opened up to all Year 6 children who would like to attend. This will provide an opportunity for children to revisit key learning, practise applying their knowledge and develop confidence in approaching the tests.

Our aim is for every child to feel well-prepared, confident and supported, while ensuring that revision remains purposeful, manageable and appropriate to each child's individual needs.

How can parents and carers help at home?

Parents and carers have an important role to play, but you do not need to become your child's teacher.

The most helpful things you can do at home are often simple:

📖 Read regularly

Encourage your child to read for pleasure every day. Talk about what they have read, ask questions about characters and events, and encourage them to explain their ideas.

✖️ Practise times tables

Regular, short practice can help children develop fluency and confidence with multiplication and division facts. This could be through games, quick-fire questions or practising together during everyday activities.

🧠 Talk about learning

Ask your child what they have been learning at school. Encourage them to explain how they worked something out or why they chose a particular answer. Being able to explain their thinking is an important part of learning.

📝 Encourage independence

Encourage your child to have a go, persevere when something is difficult and learn from mistakes. Developing confidence and resilience is just as important as knowing the right answer.

😴 Prioritise sleep and wellbeing

A good night's sleep, regular routines, healthy food, exercise and time to relax are all important. Children do not need to spend hours revising at home.

❤️ Keep things positive

Try not to make SATs a source of anxiety. Reassure your child that the tests are only one way of showing what they know and can do. Celebrate their effort, progress and achievements throughout the year.

The Department for Education's guidance for parents similarly recommends keeping things calm and positive, with simple activities such as reading together and practising times tables rather than intensive revision.

Reading at home

Regular reading remains one of the most valuable ways parents can support their child's learning. Encourage children to read a wide range of books, newspapers, magazines and other appropriate texts and talk to them about what they have read.

Mathematics at home

Everyday activities provide excellent opportunities to practise mathematics. You could ask your child to:

  • work out change when shopping;
  • compare prices;
  • calculate cooking quantities;
  • practise times tables;
  • estimate distances and amounts;
  • read timetables;
  • solve problems involving time and money.

Short, regular practice is generally more beneficial than long revision sessions.

SATs week at Peel Park

During SATs week, we want children to feel calm, confident and supported.

We will make sure that children know what to expect and have opportunities to ask questions before the assessments. We will also ensure that the normal routines of school continue, with children's wellbeing remaining at the heart of our approach.

The tests are important, but they do not define a child or their potential.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils and the progress they make during their time at Peel Park. SATs are simply one opportunity for them to show some of what they have learned.

Our message to children is simple:

Do your best, believe in yourself and be proud of how far you have come.
