The Curriculum at Peel Park Primary School
At Peel Park School we believe in the concept of lifelong learning. Through our teaching we equip children with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be able to make informed choices about the important things in their future lives. We believe that appropriate teaching and learning experiences help children to lead happy and rewarding lives and to become responsible local, national and global citizens.
The New 2014 National Curriculum and the Organisation of Learning
At Peel Park Primary School the programmes of study for all the compulsory subjects of the National Curriculum are followed. We aim to provide a broad and balanced creative curriculum which allows pupils to make links between subjects and provides opportunities for children to apply the skills they have learnt in a broader context.
In our curriculum planning we produce schemes of work which identify appropriate content, teaching and learning activities in each subject area to meet the Attainment Targets and the Programmes of Study as laid down in the Statutory Orders for National Curriculum Subjects. We strongly believe in the importance of our children acquiring basic skills and ensure these are delivered across the whole curriculum.
Teachers plan in year group or key stage teams to ensure a consistent high quality curriculum for all children. Learning is delivered in a variety of ways depending on the needs of the pupils. Children will be taught through a selection of whole class lessons, small group work or 1:1 tuition according to individual requirements. We believe that people learn best in different ways. At our school we provide a rich and varied learning environment that allows children to develop their skills and abilities to their full potential.
Every child benefits from the experience of Forest School provision which covers many vital aspects of the curriculum and reinforces basic skills.
As a very large primary school, we organise our classes as follows:
- Foundation: 3 classes
- Year 1: 3 classes
- Year 2: 3 classes
- Year 3: 3 classes
- Year 4: 3 classes
- Year 5: 3 classes
- Year 6: 3 classes
Year 1-5 classes are of mixed ability.
Year 6 classes are set for Maths and Writing.
A Typical Day at Peel Park
At Peel Park we place great importance on the acquisition of basic skills and have organised our timetable accordingly. In the majority of classes literacy and numeracy are taught daily in the morning sessions. We instil a love of reading in children taking them on the journey of learning to read to reading to learn.
A cross curricular thematic approach is used to deliver the programmes of study for all other statutory subjects of the national curriculum. We aim to provide a broad, balanced curriculum which develops children who enjoy learning and are motivated to achieve the best they can now and in the future.
